University of Cincinnati LLM Program
The University of Cincinnati College of Law offers an LLM program for International Lawyers. This LLM degree is specially designed for practicing lawyers and recent graduates of foreign law schools who wish to gain an introduction to the workings and structure of the U.S. legal system. The goal of the program is to prepare lawyers for professional dealings for which knowledge of U.S. law is beneficial, such as negotiation and litigation with U.S.-based entities and representation of U.S. clients. Additionally, lawyers have the opportunity to improve their legal English writing and speaking abilities, network with fellow international lawyers, JD students, law school faculty, and lawyers, judges, and businesspeople in the area, as practice observations at law firms, courtrooms, businesses, and government agencies may be included in the program to supplement classroom training.
The length of the program is one academic year, a period of 9 months beginning in August and ending in May, during which students are expected to reside at or near the University of Cincinnati College of Law campus in Cincinnati, Ohio. An orientation and the mandatory course Introduction to Law kick off the LLM study. The courses US Legal System and Legal Research and Writing for LLM Students are also required.
Aside from these required courses, students are free to choose their remaining courses from general law school offerings and design their course of study to suit their professional and personal legal interests. Specifically, students may elect to follow one of several Professional Pathways offered by the school in the following areas of legal study:
- Business and Entrepreneurship
- General and Small Practice
- Innovation, Technology, and Intellectual Property
- Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution
- Public Interest
- Science, Health, and Environment
The University of Cincinnati College of Law has an 11:1 student to faculty ratio and was founded in 1833, making it the fourth-oldest law school under continuous operation in the United States.
